Project Description

1979 Triumph T140D Bonneville Special

PRICE: $7,950

The year was 1979.  Triumph wasn’t exactly at the cutting edge of anything, to be frank.  Facing an onslaught of competition from less expensive and probably more advanced Japanese manufacturers, Triumph did the smartest thing they could have done with limited resources: they came out with a Special Edition.  You know, “Bold New Graphics.”  But, to be fair, the Bonneville Special was more than just a nice paint job (and, let’s face it: 40 years on, it does remain as one of Triumph’s most distinctive and handsome graphics).  With a tuned two-into-one muffler, new parallel intake tracts, new “mag” wheels, and a stately-but-not-exaggerated stepped seat, the bike looked proportionately right, but, simultaneously, contemporary.

This bike features low original miles and is mostly all stock.  The only concessions to originality are the addition of some chromed engine covers and the rare Jardine muffler.

Fully serviced and ready to ride, the Bonneville Special has aged well and now acts as a landmark for the final years of the Meriden factory.  Special, indeed.
